Flavonoids for Skin Health

Skin health is affected by several nutrients. Nutrients that have been shown to benefit skin health include: vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, peptides, and essential fatty acids.  In this blog, I will be discussing how flavonoids are great sources for skin health.

Flavonoids

Flavonoids are phytochemicals found in food. There are hundreds of flavonoid compounds that can be found in just a single type of food. They are well known for their antioxidant properties and they have the ability to absorb UV light which makes them important for skin health and possibly for sun screen properties. Flavonoids are beneficial for sun damage, wound healing and blood vessel health as well. Examples of flavonoids include; green tea polyphenols, genistein, silymarin, and others. My two favorite food sources of flavonoids include green tea and wild blueberries.

When we consume foods rich in flavonoids, they are broken down in such a way that their benefits may be slightly different than if applied topically. However, with topical application, not all flavonoids are absorbed through the skin.  For this reason, when considering topical applications of flavonoid rich substances to improve skin health, it is important to purchase a professional quality product for best results.
